Bloc Party - Letter To My Son

I thought that this was an absolutely fantastic ad. It isn’t new or anything, I just hadn’t seen it until tonight.

Have any of you already seen this?

La Blogotheque, a really great music blog based out of France, has a feature called “The Take-Away Shows”. This series of videos includes a ton of aboslutely amazing indie bands (Beirut, The National, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, etc.) performing in the most random settings. You’d be surprised what the strange locales can do to a song.

I’ll probably post more videos from time to time, but you can check out the site for yourself here.

This video is Vampire Weekend performing “The Kids Don’t Stand A Chance”

I know that these aren’t the Kool-Aid ones that we had as kids, but it’s the closest thing that I could find. These things were a downright staple of my childhood and I still think of them from time to time.

Try to think of your most traumatic childhood memory and I promise you that it pales in comparison to the discontinuation of Kool-Aid’s plastic twist-off bottles.

Yet another reason to miss the 90’s. Who’s with me?

I won’t say too much about Ray LaMontagne, mostly because I know very little about him. He just released his third LP, “Gossip In The Grain” last week. I feel like somewhere Damien Rice is kicking himself for not writing it first. “Gossip In The Grain”  is produced by Ethan Johns, who was also behind all but the newest Kings Of Leon releases.

At 35-years-old, LaMontagne didn’t release his first album until 2004, prior to which he spent his days working 65-hours a week in a shoe factory. WHAT!?!

Lucky for us, he decided that the shoe factory wasn’t for him.

Check out the album opener You Are The Best Thing below.

Ray LaMontagne - You Are The Best Thing

posted by mike paduano    posted on 17.10.08 AMAZING - 38% of people aren’t entitled to their opinion

Thought this was absolutely hilarious…

A study condudcted by the University of Chicago’s School for Behavioural Science found that 38% of Americans are “neither entitled nor qualified to have opinions.”

The following is a quote from research Professor Mark Fultze who conducted the study:

“On topics from evolution to the environment to gay marriage to immigration reform, we found that many of the opinions expressed were so off-base and ill-informed that they actually hurt society by being voiced…While people have long asserted that it takes all kinds, our research shows that American society currently has a drastic oversupply of the kinds who don’t have any good or worthwhile thoughts whatsoever. We could actually do just fine without them.”

EDIT: yes, this is from The Onion and it is a satirical report.

Weekend Update has always been my favorite recurring segment on Saturday Night Live. Last week, SNL introduced the first of four special prime time editions of the segment on Thursday night. The first 10 minutes involved a sketch of the 2nd U.S. presidential debate, which I thought was hilarious. The following 20 minutes featured an extended version of the regular Weekend Update segment which was also great.

Anyway, there are three more prime time specials airing over the next three weeks leading up to the election on November 3; the second of which airs tonight.

Given last nights 3rd and final presidential debate, I’m really hoping that the writers were able to come up with something brilliant in the past 24 hours for tonight’s show. If not, I’m sure we’ll see something Saturday night when SNL airs in its regular time slot.

SNL’s ratings have gone up by 50% so far this season, and these numbers have definitely been reflected in the show’s content. The writers and cast are really on their game and I can’t wait to see what they deliver tonight.

If you missed last week’s SNL Weekend Update Thursday, check out the presidential debate sketch here and Seth and Amy’s extended Weekend Update here.

If you’re interested (you really should be), SNL Weekend Update Thursday is on tonight at 9:30 on NBC.

(I’m thinknig that my love of Weekend Update probably has something to do with my equally strong feelings for Tina Fey, ex-head writer of SNL and co-anchor on Weekend Update. She’s a 10.)

posted by mike paduano    posted on 16.10.08 A bittersweet farewell to yoga; the fruitless search for moral support; new Coldplay just around the corner

Yes - I am still alive and my lack of posting is beyond unnacceptable. This week was full of ups and downs, but mostly academic-related downs. In a last ditch effort to save my looming average, I decided to drop a course - which is something that I never thought I would have to do. So goodbye ‘Yoga in India and the West’ (yes, I too was fooled by the relatively easy-sounding nature of the course). I really did enjoy a lot of the class material and especially the yoga classes; but ultimately, it was not meant to be.

Immediately after making this decision, I discussed the implications of my actions with roomate and confidante Alex Di Blasio. Moral support is critical in these times of distress and Alex is always one to provide unparalleled advice. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: “Alex, is it pathetic that I dropped yoga and am now only taking 4 courses?”
Alex: “Yes, very much so”

In other news…

Right off the heels their latest LP, “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends”, Coldplay is already set to release a new EP entitled “Prospekt’s March” on November 25 in Canada and the U.S. Check out the artwork above.

The EP contains 8 songs which had not been completed for the band’s May deadline for “Viva La VIda…”. In addition to the regular EP, Coldplay will release a special deluxe version of “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends” which includes the new 8 tracks.

According to Chris Martin, “the songs have each been the subject of many discussions and arguments. Some might be too catchy or too heavy for Coldplay songs; but in our mind, they complete the VIVA LA VIDA picture.”

The tracklisting is as follows:

  1. “Life in Technicolor II”
  2. “Postcards from Far Away”
  3. “Glass of Water”
  4. “Rainy Day”
  5. “Prospekt’s March/Poppyfields”
  6. “Lost +” (feat. Jay-Z)
  7. “Lovers in Japan (Osaka Sun Mix)”
  8. “Now My Feet Won’t Touch the Ground”

Also - I am fully aware that I use way too many adjectives.

Be well
