Weekend Update has always been my favorite recurring segment on Saturday Night Live. Last week, SNL introduced the first of four special prime time editions of the segment on Thursday night. The first 10 minutes involved a sketch of the 2nd U.S. presidential debate, which I thought was hilarious. The following 20 minutes featured an extended version of the regular Weekend Update segment which was also great.
Anyway, there are three more prime time specials airing over the next three weeks leading up to the election on November 3; the second of which airs tonight.
Given last nights 3rd and final presidential debate, I’m really hoping that the writers were able to come up with something brilliant in the past 24 hours for tonight’s show. If not, I’m sure we’ll see something Saturday night when SNL airs in its regular time slot.
SNL’s ratings have gone up by 50% so far this season, and these numbers have definitely been reflected in the show’s content. The writers and cast are really on their game and I can’t wait to see what they deliver tonight.
If you missed last week’s SNL Weekend Update Thursday, check out the presidential debate sketch here and Seth and Amy’s extended Weekend Update here.
If you’re interested (you really should be), SNL Weekend Update Thursday is on tonight at 9:30 on NBC.
(I’m thinknig that my love of Weekend Update probably has something to do with my equally strong feelings for Tina Fey, ex-head writer of SNL and co-anchor on Weekend Update. She’s a 10.)
